Reflective Statement

05/23/2023 When I started this course, I was advice I will to keep taking notes about class. However, I did not think it would be that challenging and enriching for me. As I am taking my last year of university and I am enroll in a TESOL class, as part of my graduation process, the class and I were requested to keep journaling every class since that would help to the one of the last activities for the subject. However, in some part of the course I started to procrastinate some of the journals, until I realize I was missing more than 40% of the classes. That cause me difficulties when I was trying to keep on track with them. On the other hand, this was the first time journaling in my life, so I was taking just some notes that it was considered relevant for me, nevertheless, when I was asked to start this blog using my journals and summarize my class it was a big issue, because I have assumed that short notes would be enough, but it was not. Due to so,   I   had to check...

Tapping, clapping and finger tracing

Feb 08 2024      When we start to prepare a class we need to also consider the techniques we would like to put in practice, in this case we will talk about three techniques that can help us in an ESL class, we can have techniques as tapping, clapping, and tracing our finger. In this post we will check about clapping. Whe we use clapping we require our student to clap at the time they are practicing syllabus. For example, we request our students to choose a word and clap for each syllabus. This makes our students to better retain how to pronouns a word for instance or the intonation of it.     W e also need to identify how to use clapping in a class. During the process to create a class we can encounter that creating a class cannot be as easy as we think, and if we have already chosen a technique that we would like to apply, this can be even harder since we need to adapt this technique with the class, and ensure that at the end of the class we will achiev...

Cognitive Views of Learning

03/19/2024      When we take about knowledge, we need to take into account that we have general and specific knowledge, since we use some information in specific situation. For example, when we are at the doctor’s and we need to express about specific pain we need to know here the pain is and in some case the name of the area or organ. While there are some information that is general that we use in daily basic situations as our daily life when we talk about weather for instead.       We also need to keep in mind that we have three source of memory. We have the long term memory that is the one that store all the information we need to remember it can explicit or implicit. The working memory that helps us to work with information without losing a track this plays with sensory memory. Finally we have sensory memory that helps us process and detect stimulus and assign meaning.      As well in we can mention that order to transfer inf...

This societi even judge us before we have even start our projects. This negative feedback we can also make us feel as we are no capable to do something, and what is worst, we have even tried. In this book also share with use that we need to really need to focused on what matters and not in what other people thinks that may happen. In this book    Bukowski was consider a bad person on his worst days, however, he was able to achieve his goal to be a writer. And showed that we cannot change what we was, at the end are hat we are, human being that make mistakes.      Then we encounter in the book the chapter The Feedback Loop from Hell. In this chapter we find that we are giving more attention to thing that may not be important. As it is expr...

Iwareru and meiwaku

Feb 15 2024      When we are in ESL classroom in most of the cases we are used to some methods and routines that may be part of our learning process. As example, it is common that in America, teachers try to encourage students to make as many questions as needed in order to ensure that the information transmitted was clearly explained. However, when we are in ESL classrooms we come across different cultural practices that may make feel unconformable to some students. For instance, in Japan there is something called Iwareru and meiwaku. According to Gregory (1983) has indicated that two major components of this system of values in Japan are  iwareru  (spoken of by others) and  meiwaku  (inconvenience to others). This means that iwareru makes students think about what other may think if they make something, and meiwaku makes students thinks if what they do may cause inconvenience with others.      Placing this in the classroom, in a Japanese student’s ...

Since bilingualism is the ability to speak two languages, it is important to mention that the youngest we expose to a language the fastest that would be for us to acquire that language proficiently. We need to know that when we are bilingual, it can happen that we are more proficient in one language that another. This is since or proficiency could be based on variety of reasons as the time we dedicate to practice or we are exposed to one language that the other. Also it is importna to mention that there are some countries in Europe that take bilingualism seriously. since they include a second language as part of their academic training. Also they are used to listen conversations in different languages due to the multiculturality in their countries. Here in America, we have places as Quebec, where many people speak English and French.      In some case when people are bilingual and they ...

Language Proficiency

03/05/2024      When we refer to Language Proficiency, it refers to the ability to communicate properly in another languages. We also need to take into account that we need to be able to communicate in a face to face scenarios properly. Since when we refer to Language Proficiency, we need to be proficient in no just speaking, we need to read, write and listen effectively. When we want to measure someone’s proficiency, we need to know that we can divided their proficiency in levels as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. This level refers to “A” for basic conversation that students may feel comfortable when taking about basic information from us. “B” as intermediate since learned show that we manage a variety of vocabulary and also we have good understanding of grammar. And “C” as intermediate advance for this level someone can take and express their ideas about technical information and topics.       According to Cummins (1984) “ It could take two years for a...

Kibun

Feb 29 2024      As we have reviewed in previously post, we are dealing to understand how culture can act around the world at the time that we are in an ESL classrooms environments, since culture plays a strong role at the time that we are giving and received classes in ESL context. In this opportunity we will focus our attention on Kibun.   If we have not heard the word “Kibun” we can related as “mood”. Basically is the mood that a student’s shows at the time they participate. As teachers we need to know that students are not always comfortable or willing to participate in the class. According to Fisher (1991) in Japan “Kidun refers to how people feel or think about something” we can notice about this by taking a look at their no-verbal communication as: eye contact, behaviors, facial expressions, etc. On the other hand in Korea Kibun, refers more to “mood” and “feeling”. Kibun in Korea also appears in social hierarchy, since in some case teachers and employer...

02/20/2024      When we start a new class we are exacted about how this class will be go in the how semester or unit. However, it is important that in a classroom for ESL students we can face with different cultures and behaviors, so that it is essential to keep the eye open and read what our students wants to transmits with not verbal communication. Basically this is what   nunch’i means, according to Martin and his colleagues (1967) define the nominative usage of  nunch’i  as "tact, savoir faire, sense, social sense, perceptiveness, an eye for social situations” In this case we need to be preventive and intuitive at the time we look at our students, we can service if they are willing to participate actively or passively. Since we can also notice when a student would like to participate without being ask to do it.      On the other hand when we want to learn about nunch’i we need to take into account four cultural concepts in East Korea: Dualism of the ...
